Adenosine Triphosphate

Crinklechips This is a modern sounding jazz album with a really punchy, hard hitting mix. Now, I’m no jazz officianado but I reckon this album has somewhat of a Canterbury scene sound. That was a collection of early progressive rockers heavily influenced by jazz and I believe also influencing jazz to come.

The musicianship here is extremely high and like the best jazz there are moments when I feel like I’m leaving my body to soar away in music land. I couldn’t recommend it more than that!

about

Within the DNA of Samuele Strufaldi’s new work, energy is in constant movement: asymmetric structures and changes of tempo rhythmput into action a kinetic force propelling the group towards a cycle of action and reaction. Science, tightrope walking, and a kaleidoscopic musical background are the molecules that make up Ismael Circus, led by Strufaldi, which arrives at Auand with the album “Adenosine Triphosphate”. A title which will improbably be associated with jazz, yet instead captures its essence, as the leader explains: “Adenosine Triphosphate is an important high energy chemical compound which various metabolic and energetic reactions of the cells are based on. So the name of the entire disc is Energy, a particular force produced by molecular synthesis, which is also the constitutional make-up of the RNA, fundamental in giving energy to the molecules.”

Born in 1989, the pianist worked on this album in various phases: there are some songs from his initial creative years like “Suite for Ahmed” and other compositions that are more recent and an outcome of a maturing process. Also his research on sound production has been selective and sifted through time: Ismael Circus’s nucleus is made up of the percussionist Marco Calì and the double bass player Alessandro Cianferoni. Some of the songs found their definitive form with these musicians, while in the final version of the album the presence of two saxophonists, Claudio Giovagnoli and Yuri Romboli, add dynamism and profundity to the tracks laid down by the trio. A solid trio base which has been amplified, extended, and finely tuned to become a quintet.

If the structures and rhythms play on the changing of the reference points, the melodies and the harmonies are concentrated into hypnotic repetitions, almost obsessive. Like a chemical experiment of a compound whereby different elements are gradually added so as to study its reaction: this is the function of the harmonic mantras, forming the base for the reactions of the wind instruments, piano and rhythms, which erupt into an explosion of sound transforming itself from moment to moment.
