In “Confine”, Italian pianist Samuele Strufaldi
on a quest to discover the meaning of consciousness and error

Samuele Strufaldi’s very first piano solo is the new digital tile in the Auand Piano Series. Recorded live at European Culture Institute in Wien on May 7th, “Confine” is the result of an artistic residency that gave Strufaldi the chance to dive deep into the idea of error, as seen from an improvisational point of view.

“This recording – the Italian pianist says – has been inspired by a research on the value and balance between consciousness and unconsciousness. It starts from the need of facing errors and the limit of being in control. Our current social context demands perfection: everything is analyzed by our mind. So there is even more need to give in and have an open discussion with your dark side, with humility and honesty, trying to find original unrefined materials created by a constant interaction as well as confrontation between consciousness and ignorance”.

This is a thought Strufaldi has been cultivating for quite some time in several fields, not only music. The album title, “Confine” (“Border”), highlights “this quest in wildland, where knowledge can’t illustrate or assert. On the contrary, it helps exploring your inner self, as well as putting your ego and your habits aside for a while”.

This is how improvisation turns into a ritual: a way to get closer to the dark side. “It helps accessing something that is beyond music, beyond language. It evokes a territory with no expectations or intellectualism: the land of unpredictable, to be explored and shared with the audience”.
